Intellectual alienation

Twice-exceptional (2e)

Twice-exceptional
Gifted and something else (ADHD, dyslexia, autism, anxiety) at the same time. The two mask each other. The gift covers the disability (“she’s fine, she’s smart”), and the disability hides the gift (“he’s lazy”). Plenty of 2e people reach adulthood identified as neither, having only been told they weren’t trying.

Pattern · Clinical consensusAsynchrony
The gifted-education field’s own definition of giftedness is about uneven development, not IQ: a mind running years ahead of the feelings and body carrying it. It means the kid is several ages at once and no single room fits. The distance grows with the gap. Where else it shows up →
Pattern · Practitioner wisdomHead as home
When the body or the room isn’t safe, the mind becomes the place to live: books, systems, daydreams, analysis. It works, and it builds formidable minds. It also leaves the body as a vehicle you drive from somewhere above it. It shows up as intellectualizing feelings, not noticing hunger or pain until they’re screaming, and feeling unreal. The way back in usually runs through the body, not more thinking about it. Where else it shows up →
