Where does it come from?

Early, repeated overwhelm. Usually it’s a whole environment rather than one bad event, and it happens before a kid’s sense of self has knit together. Often the overwhelm came from the very people who were supposed to be the safe place. Dissociation is what a child’s nervous system does when it can’t fight and can’t flee: leave without leaving. It’s a brilliant solution, and it gets expensive later.

Pattern · ResearchACEs
The ACE study counted categories of childhood adversity in more than 9,000 adults: abuse, neglect, a parent with addiction or mental illness, divorce, a family member in prison, violence at home. The more categories someone had, the higher their adult risk of depression, heart disease, autoimmune disease, and early death. What it doesn’t count is what cushioned the blow. Practitioners will tell you one steady adult changes the math. Where else it shows up →
Pattern · Practitioner wisdomHypervigilance
The kid in the unpredictable house, where a parent’s mood could turn on a dime through drinking, rage, or plain chaos. The child becomes a forecaster who tracks footsteps, tone of voice, the sound of keys in the door. It’s a genuinely impressive skill. Grown up, the forecaster can’t switch it off: hypervigilant, reading every micro-expression, bracing even when things are calm. Where else it shows up →
