ACEs

The ACE study counted categories of childhood adversity in more than 9,000 adults: abuse, neglect, a parent with addiction or mental illness, divorce, a family member in prison, violence at home. The more categories someone had, the higher their adult risk of depression, heart disease, autoimmune disease, and early death. What it doesn’t count is what cushioned the blow. Practitioners will tell you one steady adult changes the math.
