Parentification

Oldest of many, with a mother who was overwhelmed, absent, or checked out. The eldest becomes the second parent: feeds the little ones, reads the room, handles it. Researchers call this instrumental parentification. Practitioners meet this person later as the competent one everyone leans on: hyper-responsible, unable to ask for help, and often first in line for the illnesses of never resting (pain, fatigue, autoimmunity). The gift inside it is that they really are competent.

Patterns are recurring shapes, not verdicts. Recognizing yourself in one is information, not a diagnosis, and nobody is to blame for the shape a childhood had to take.
